R&D Projects

METIS co-ordinates and participates in a number of EU & National projects in the fields of IoT & Maritime. A detailed list of the Projects can be found in the following links.

The PERPS project proposes a holistic approach to the development of feasible and sustainable innovative, technical solutions for the perpetual operation of IoT edge nodes and portable/wearable electronics. The proposed studies aim to the development of methods, as well as specific power supply units, which will enable current and future embedded networked systems to operate globally by harvesting energy from their surroundings, adapting optimally to the time-varying available ambient energy content….

The new data-driven industrial revolution driven highlights the need for big data technologies to unlock the potential in various application domains. To this end, DIASTEMA delivers a complete high-performant stack of technologies addressing the emerging needs of data operations and applications. The stack is based on a frontrunner infrastructure management system that drives decisions according to data aspects thus being fully scalable, runtime adaptable and performant for big data operations and data-intensive applications…..

The decarbonisation targets of the shipping sector by IMO are extremely challenging and require active measures as soon as possible. ENGIMMONIA comes with solutions that focus on the “source of emissions” to achieve the decarbonisation targets in multiple waves, according to the global introduction of alternative fuels, e.g. ammonia fuel for shipping. To reach these ambitions and accelerate the transition towards green shipping, ENGIMMONIA relies on a flexible approach, combining a carbon-free fuel like ammonia with energy efficiency and other measures: (1) ammonia dual-fuel engines for the ship propulsion and electricity generation, (2) waste heat recovery solutions based on ORC and adsorption chiller for the production of electricity and space cooling respectively, (3) energy/heat management including any other efficiency measures and renewables, and (4) advanced operational practices including the energy management tools. The overall objective of ENGIMMONIA is to develop and test flexible technologies at TRL over 5 that greatly reduce GHG emissions from all kind of long distance shipping and reduce the fuel consumption, and thus ensure their sustainability…..

EFOS Project

Marine weather forecast, especially for overseas voyages, relies nowadays on sophisticated numerical prediction models based on observations collected from weather stations and balloons, radar and satellites. The low resolution though of such means (ranging from tens up to hundreds of kilometers) results in reduced accuracy and increased uncertainty, limiting the prediction to narrow short-term time intervals. A question is then raised on how good-quality observation data can be gathered over the data-sparse oceans and extended sea areas or for predicting the weather in the immediate following hours…..

The 4th Industrial Revolution changes data in Maritime in a rapid way. The main obstacle for the application of the new technologies in a massive way and with a fast pace is humans themselves. They don’t have the know-how, in order to apply and embed these technologies into their working routine. Digital technologies offer higher quality information and knowledge that can affect in a definitive way the mechanisms of decision making in maritime companies, given that the employees discover the way to harness it. In METIS, based on our experience, we pinpointed this limiting factor regarding the application of the new digital services and started the path for the creation of a median interface between thethe users and the digital services which will be easy and simple to use, demanding no time to learn using it. This application is based on the usage of Natural Language Processing in combination with Machine Learning…….
